PLDO Partner Brian J. Lamoureux will be a Panelist at the RI League of Cities and Towns Workshop on Digital and Social Media Law for Municipalities

Pannone Lopes Devereaux & O’Gara LLC (PLDO) Partner Brian J. Lamoureux, a prominent business litigator and employment attorney who is a national voice on social and digital media law, will serve as a panelist at the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns “Social Media Training Session” on Wednesday, May 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Rhode Island Interlocal Risk Management Trust, 501 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence.

Attorney Lamoureux will address the unique legal and constitutional challenges faced by municipalities in developing, administering and enforcing social media policies for employees, including employee access and use of devices owned by the municipality. He will also provide information on trends in the social and digital media space and how cities and towns can reduce risks and avoid potential pitfalls with social media use.

“There are unique and challenging legal issues for municipalities and public employees that complicate social media policies and procedures,” said Attorney Lamoureux. “First and foremost, constitutional issues are critical and require municipalities to be extra thoughtful in how they manage social media, interact with the public and work with their employees. Staying up-to-date on current state and federal laws and being proactive in understanding this evolving area of the law is vital for public officials. I commend the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns’ leadership for holding this workshop for their members.”

Attorney Lamoureux is a member of PLDO’s Employment, Litigation, Cyber Law, and Corporate & Business Teams. His extensive practice areas include complex commercial litigation, employment law, social media law, and creditors’ rights. In addition to being an accomplished business litigator, he is a frequent guest speaker, published author and broadcast commentator on social and digital media legal issues in the news, having made appearances on WPRI-TV, WJAR-TV, WPRO-AM, and NECN-TV. He also created and teaches an MBA-level course called “Digital and Social Media in the Business Environment” at his alma mater, Providence College, where he is also a Practitioner Faculty member. In 2011, he was honored for his achievements by Providence Business News with a 40 Under Forty award.

Attorney Lamoureux holds a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Rhode Island and earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the Syracuse University College of Law. At the same time, he received a Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He is qualified to serve as a receiver in Rhode Island Superior Court.
