Rhode Island – September 24, 2024 – Pannone Lopes Devereaux & O’Gara LLC (PLDO) Partner Brian J. Lamoureux, a prominent business litigator and employment attorney who is a leading voice on social and digital media law, presented an update on “Artificial Intelligence in the Courts” to members of the Rhode Island Judiciary at the 2024 Fall Judicial Conference on Friday, September 20, 2024.
Attorney Lamoureux, who first presented on Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) at the 2023 Rhode Island Fall Judicial Conference, explained how the most popular AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are evolving; how attorneys are increasingly using AI to aid in the discovery process, mediation and arbitration; and how the Courts are adapting and placing limitations on their use in legal proceedings. He also demonstrated the accuracy of predicative rulings, weighed AI’s benefits and limitations when using to aid in discovery, mediation and arbitration, and offered attendees practical tips and best practices.
“The growing use of AI in the legal field raises a number of complex questions and ethical concerns,” said Attorney Lamoureux. “It is critical to strike the right balance between harnessing the benefits of these tools yet ensuring accuracy and fairness, which can only be achieved through evidence, human judgement and legal reasoning. It was an honor to address the prestigious members of the judiciary and share my knowledge and insights on this ever-evolving technology that has the potential to radically alter the practice of law.”
