Rhode Island – September 27, 2023 – Pannone Lopes Devereaux & O’Gara LLC (PLDO) Partner Brian J. Lamoureux, a prominent business litigator and employment attorney who is a leading voice on social and digital media law, presented “Rise of the Machines: Artificial Intelligence in the Courts” to members of the Rhode Island Judiciary at the 2023 Fall Judicial Conference on Friday, September 22, 2023.
Since its recent grand entrance to the world stage, ChatGPT and other Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) tools have been infiltrating and proliferating past the tech and business worlds and into the judicial system. Attorney Lamoureux’s presentation demonstrated how the most popular AI tools such as ChatGPT work, pointing out AI’s benefits and limitations, and discussed the myriad of ways they are currently being used – and may be used – by the legal profession and in courts. Attorney Lamoureux also emphasized the important considerations for attorneys and judges as AI becomes more mainstream and utilized in legal proceedings, including accuracy, data, bias, and privacy concerns.
“The use of AI in legal proceedings is still in infancy but, no doubt, on the rise,” said Attorney Lamoureux. “As with any new and advanced technology – particularly one that is designed to mimic human behavior and automate manual tasks – there are shortcomings and important legal and ethical considerations. It was an honor to address the prestigious members of the judiciary and to share my knowledge and insight on this ever-evolving technology that will continue to transform our society.”
